The list of 2023 NFL free agents is incredibly full right now. That includes former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and one of the best all-around backs in the game, Saquon Barkley.
Obviously, this list will dwindle as top-end players sign contract extensions. The NFL franchise tag will also play a role in who hits the open market this spring.
As it stands, here’s our list of the top NFL free agents for 2023. This includes a positional breakdown at the bottom.

1. Lamar Jackson, quarterback, Baltimore Ravens
It’s now not a foregone conclusion that Jackson will return to the Ravens next season. Rumors suggest that there’s a rift between the team and star quarterback after he missed the end of the season due to injury.

What we do know is that Jackson is highly unlikely to hit the NFL free agent market. The former first-round pick is more likely to have the franchise tag placed on him and be traded than actually become a free agent. A return to Baltimore is also still very much in the cards.
2. Saquon Barkley, running back, New York Giants
Despite finding himself injury plagued over the past two seasons heading into 2022, Barkley is going to be one of the most intriguing NFL free agents of the 2023 cycle. The former Penn State star was dominant in 2022, recording 1,650 total yards while averaging 4.7 yards per touch.

3. Orlando Brown Jr., offensive tackle, Kansas City Chiefs
Projected to be one of the top NFL free agents of the 2022 cycle, Brown saw the franchise tag placed on him. He initially held out of camp after failing to come to terms on a contract extension ahead of the deadline. At the very least, things are not trending in the right direction between Brown and his Chiefs. That could lead to him actually hitting the open market in March rather than Kansas City placing the franchise tag on its star left tackle with a 20% pay increase from last season’s $16.662 million salary.
4. Derek Carr, quarterback, Las Vegas Raiders
- Derek Carr career stats: 91.8 QB rating, 64.6% completion rate, 217 passing touchdowns
Once the Las Vegas Raiders moved on from Derek Carr as their starting quarterback, he wasn’t going to do the organization a favor by approving a trade. Following his release, Carr becomes one of the top NFL free agents available. He is well-suited to play indoors, avoiding teams that would most likely be playing in frigid and windy temperatures in January. However, he can be a great fit in the right system.
Carr is a smart, accurate quarterback who can take advantage of the talent around him. The New Orleans Saints are likely the favorites to land him, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In other words, expect Carr to be starting for an NFC South team in 2023 unless New York comes through.
5. Geno Smith, quarterback, Seattle Seahawks
What a difference a couple of years make. It was just back in 2020 that Smith was on the verge of finding himself out of the NFL altogether. This past regular season with Seattle, he looked like a legit MVP candidate a majority of the time en route to winning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

We’re not entirely sure what the market will be for Smith. But he is among the most-interesting NFL free agents of the cycle. That’s for sure.

6. Bobby Wagner, linebacker, Los Angeles Rams
Wagner, 32, played extremely well in his first season with the Rams after spending a decade with the division-rival Seattle Seahawks. The former second-round pick from Utah State recorded 140 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, six sacks and two interceptions. Opposing quarterbacks also posted a mere 87.1 passer rating when targeting him in coverage. He’ll have a strong market.
7. Jordan Poyer, safety, Buffalo Bills
Poyer’s emergence to elite status took some time. He was a cast off of both the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles before joining Buffalo back in 2017. Since then, it’s been all about an upward trajectory. This past season alone, Poyer yielded a 60.1 QB rating while recording four interceptions in 12 games.
8. Daron Payne, defensive tackle, Washington Commanders
For the better part of his five-year career, Payne has performed at a Pro Bowl level. This span has seen the Alabama product record a combined 55 quarterback hits and 26 sacks. That’s tremendous production from the defensive tackle position. He’s also coming off a career-best 2022 season in which the former first-round pick has racked up 11.5 sacks in 17 games.
9. Josh Jacobs, running back, Las Vegas Raiders
Jacobs put up north of 1,300 total yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2019 before earning Pro Bowl honors as a sophomore. Sure Jacobs had somewhat of a down 2021 season, but he’s seen as one of the better young backs in the game. That’s was taken to a whole new level during a contract year in which the Alabama product won the NFL rushing title with 1,653 yards. He also put up 400 receiving yards to cross the 2,000-yard plateau while scoring 12 touchdowns. That seems pretty good.
10. Tony Pollard, running back, Dallas Cowboys
There’s a darn good chance that Dallas simply opts to release Ezekiel Elliott and re-sign Pollard to a massive contract once the offseason comes calling. Pollard, 25, has been a find for this team since it made him a fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In fact, the Memphis product is coming off a 2022 season in which he tallied 1,378 total yards and 12 touchdowns at a clip of 5.9 yards per touch. That’s elite-level stuff.
11. Jimmy Garoppolo, quarterback, San Francisco 49ers
Jimmy Garoppolo returned to the 49ers for another season after restructuring his contract. He was the team’s starting quarterback following the season-ending injury to Trey Lance. It’s in this that he has now upped his value for NFL free agency. San Francisco was 6-3 in his nine starts this past season with the quarterback tallying 18 total touchdowns against just four interceptions. Yet, another injury could impact his status in free agency. He’s also highly unlikely to return to San Francisco with Brock Purdy having cemented his status as the 49ers’ QB1 and Lance still around.
12. James Bradberry, cornerback, Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia’s acquisition of Bradberry from the division-rival Giants last offseason flew under the radar. But the dude was absolutely brilliant opposite Darius Slay for the NFL’s best regular-season team in 2022. Bradberry recorded 17 passes defended and three interceptions while yielding a 51.6 QB rating when targeted. He’ll be among the best NFL free agents come March.

Top NFL free agent of 2023: Underrated players
13. Yannick Ngakoue, EDGE, Indianapolis Colts
Production. Production. More production. Despite being cast off by multiple teams throughout his career, the 27-year-old Ngakoue simply continues to produce. He recorded 23 QB hits and 10 sacks for the Raiders in 2021 before being dealt to Indianapolis. In 15 games this past season, the former Maryland star racked up 9.5 sacks. Still in his prime, he should have a strong market come March.
14. Jonathan Jones, cornerback, New England Patriots
Jones, 29, has pretty much been a full-time starter since New England made him an undrafted free agent back in 2016. The Auburn product had played pretty well leading up to the 2022 season. But he took it to a whole new level in a contract year. That includes Jones yielding a 53.3% completion and 73.7 QB rating when targeted. He’ll certainly be among the most-attractice NFL free agents of the spring.
15. Javon Hargrave, defensive tackle, Philadelphia Eagles
Speaking of a strong market, NFL teams value interior pass rushers. This is exactly what Hargrave has proven he can been since the Pittsburgh Steelers made him a third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Since joining Philadelphia as a free agent back in 2020, Hargrave has racked up 42 QB hits and 23 sacks in 48 games. This past season, he tallied 11sacks in 17 games.
16. Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker, Buffalo Bills
Playing out the fifth-year option on his rookie deal, this former first-round pick is actually playing at the highest level of his career. Edmunds proved to be much better in coverage this past season than we’ve seen in the past (71.2 QB rating allowed). An all-around three-down backer in today’s NFL will have value on the open market. That’s for sure.
17. Marcus Peters, cornerback, Baltimore Ravens
Speaking of injuries, Peters missed the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL. Still only 30, he struggled to return from said injury in 2022 (113.7 QB rating allowed). Despite this, someone should take a chance on a three-time Pro Bowler who has in the past proven to be among the best ball hawks in the league.
18. Daniel Jones, quarterback, New York Giants
Jones will be an interesting case study should the Giants let him actually test free agency. He was terrible in two seasons following his rookie campaign, throwing 21 touchdowns against 17 interceptions from 2020-21. But the former first-round pick turned it around big time this past season. He tallied 22 total touchdowns with just five picks. Reports indicate that Jones will have a robust market. Though, he could also be nothing more than a one-year wonder.
19. Miles Sanders, running back, Philadelphia Eagles
Miles Sanders made waves during the 2022 regular season. The former Penn State star put up 1,269 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns at a clip of 4.9 yards per tote. The only issue here is a lack of being a dual-threat out of the backfield. He registered just 78 receiving yards in 17 games. That will have an impact on Sanders’ market once NFL free agency opens.
20. Robert Quinn, EDGE, Philadelphia Eagles
Just recently acquired from the Chicago Bears in a blockbuster trade, Quinn is looking to cash in on the open market despite an injury-plagued 2022 campaign in which he put up one sack in 13 games. Back in 2021, the three-time Pro Bowler recorded an astounding 18.5 sacks to go with 22 quarterback hits. The only question here is his relatively advanced age of 32.
21. Jacoby Brissett, QB, Cleveland Browns
Jacoby Brissett was put into a difficult spot in 2022 by unexpectedly being thrust into the starting QB spot for the Browns, due to the suspension of Deshaun Watson. However, he performed well and the offense was far better this past season with him leading the unit than Watson. In 11 starts, he posted the best passer and quarterback rating of his career and proved he is a viable starting option for teams in search of a placeholder in 2023.
22. Devin Singletary, running back, Buffalo Bills
Devin Singletary never turned into the backfield threat the Bills hoped for when they made him the starter in 2020. However, he is still a talented combo back who could be a worthwhile addition for a team that prefers a run game-by-committee approach. Furthermore, at 25, his best years are still ahead of him.
23. Vonn Bell, safety, Cincinnati Bengals
Prior to this past season, Bell had been a good in-the-box safety with questionable coverage skills. In fact, he yielded a combined 115.8 QB rating the previous two years combined. Something has changed in a contract year with the former Ohio State standout having recorded four interceptions while giving up a 64.0 rating when targeted. We’ll have to wait and see if this is just a mirage.
24. Dalton Schultz, tight end, Dallas Cowboys
Despite dealing with some injuries this past season, Schultz has still been able to produce for the Cowboys. He caught 64% of his 89 targets in nine games and is Dallas’ second-leading receiver behind CeeDee Lamb. This comes on the heels of a 2021 campaign in which he tallied 78 catches for 808 yards. Schultz will be one of the top NFL free agents from the tight end spot in March. That’s for sure.
25. Dalton Risner, offensive line, Denver Broncos
Teams value flexibility on the offensive line. That’s one of the reasons Risner will be among the most intriguing NFL free agents of the 2023 cycle. The former second-round pick out of Kansas State has started all 62 games he’s appeared since entering the league in 2019. He’s played both guard spots during that span and has a history of playing right tackle. Look for a top-of-the-market deal in free agency for Risner.
26. T.J. Edwards, linebacker, Philadelphia Eagles
Edwards has improved each and every since the Eagles made him an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin back in 2019. He’s now considered one of the better all-around backers in the game and should get paid like it. The 26-year-old Illinois native registered 159 tackles to go with 10 tackles for loss, five QB hits and seven passes defended in 17 games this past season. Opposing signal callers also posted a mere 82.1 passer rating when targeting him.

NFL free agents: Rest of the top 50
27. Mike McGlinchey, offensive tackle, San Francisco 49ers
A first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2018, McGlinchey has been inconsistent throughout his career. He missed nine games to injury in 2021 and struggled big time at right tackle back in 2020. But the dude put together a career performance in a contract year en route to helping San Francisco win 10 consecutive to close out the regular season.
28. Odell Beckham Jr., wide receiver, Los Angeles Rams
Beckham Jr., 30, missed all of last season with a torn ACL he suffered in the Super Bowl as a member of the Rams. While teams such as the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills showed interest, he just wasn’t ready to return. Despite this, the three-time Pro Bowler should still be met with a solid market. He’s averaging 66 receptions for north of 920 yards throughout his career.
29. Dalvin Tomlinson, defensive tackle, Minnesota Vikings
As NFL free agency this cycle go, Tomlinson is extremely underrated. The former second-round pick of the Giants back in 2017, he’s been a consistent run-stuffer throughout his career. Tomlinson, 28, is also a sure tackler. He did not miss a single one as a member of the Vikings last season while registering 10 QB hits and 2.5 sacks.
30. Evan Engram, tight end, Jacksonville Jaguars
A former Pro Bowler with the Giants, Engram took a chance by signing a one-year contract with Jacksonville in free agency last season. Boy, did he up his market. The former first-round pick from Mississippi caught 73 passes for 766 yards while hauling in a whopping 75% of his targets from Trevor Lawrence. That seems pretty darn good.
31. Lavonte David, linebacker, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
A former All-Pro, the 33-year-old David is no longer the player he used to be. He was still able to record 124 tackles (10 for loss) and three sacks while starting all 17 games for Tampa Bay a season ago. Unfortunately, David also yielded an absurdly high 75.3% completion rate when targeted. He’s likely not going to be viewed as more than a two-down backer once NFL free agency opens.
32. Jessie Bates, safety, Cincinnati Bengals
Bates, 25, played under the franchise tag this past season. It was somewhat surprising given how much he struggled in coverage back in 2021 (122.0 QB rating when targeted). However, the young safety stepped it up big time in a contract year. Bates gave up a mere 51.4% completion and 76.1 QB rating in coverage this past season. He also recorded a career-high four interceptions. This has Bates as one of the best NFL free agents from the secondary in 2023.
33. Fletcher Cox, defensive tackle, Philadelphia Eagles
A six-time Pro Bowler during his brilliant 11-year career, Cox is nowhere near his prime. It should impact him heading into free agency. He can still be a productive part-time player on the interior of the defensive line.
34. C.J. Gardner-Johnson, safety, Philadelphia Eagles
The defending NFC champs scored big time when they acquired Gardner-Johnson from the New Orleans Saints last offseason for the equivalent of a late-round pick. A former star at Florida, Gardner-Johnson recorded a league-best six interceptions while yielding a mere 78.4 QB rating when targeted. A true ball hawk in every sense of the term, Gardner-Johnson will draw a ton of interest in NFL free agency.

35. D.J. Chark, wide receiver, Detroit Lions
A former 1,000-yard receiver with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chark landed with Detroit on a one-year deal last offseason. He had suffered a fractured ankle back in 2021 with Jacksonville and re-injured his ankle early last season. In 11 games, Chark registered 30 receptions for 500 yards and three touchdowns. He caught only 57.7% of his targets and boasted a near 10% drop rate. Teams will have interest on a short-term and inexpensive contract.
36. Jamel Dean, cornerback, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
One of the more underrated NFL free agents of the cycle, Dean is still only 26 years old. Last season saw the Auburn product record eight passes defended and two picks in 15 games while holding quarterbacks to a 55.4% completion. As an outside cornerback, he should have a huge market.
37. Jimmie Ward, safety, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco’s longest-tenured player, Ward continues to fly under the radar. He can play both safeties spots and in the slot at cornerback. In fact, it’s been a point of contention between the former first-round pick and his current organization. This will likely lead to a departure from Northern California after Ward recorded a career-best three interceptions in 2022.
38. Baker Mayfield, quarterback, Los Angeles Rams
This embattled former No. 1 pick spent time with both the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams a season ago. He struggled in Carolina before being waived. Once in Southern California, Mayfield actually played at a high level despite the Rams’ injury issues. The former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year should land in a spot in free agency where he’ll be able to compete for a starting job.
39. Mike Gesicki, tight end, Miami Dolphins
Gesicki was a fish out of water in his first season under Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. After averaging 63 receptions for 741 yards his previous two seasons, Penn State product recorded a split of 32-362 in 2022. He’ll likely head somewhere else once NFL free agency opens. And there’s going to be a ton of interest.
40. Ben Powers, guard, Baltimore Ravens
A mid-round pick out of Oklahoma back in 2019, Powers has morphed into a reliable starting guard for Baltimore. He started all 17 games a season ago, going penalty-free without yielding a single sack in the process. Powers is going to be among the most-intriguing NFL free agents of the cycle given the lack of starter-caliber guards available on the open market.
41. Allen Lazard, wide receiver, Green Bay Packers
Aaron Rodgers was relying on Lazard to step up big time a season ago after Green Bay traded star Davante Adams. While he put up decent numbers (60 receptions, 788 yards, 60% catch rate), Lazard proved he’s nowhere near a true No. 1 receiver. It will be interesting to see how teams view him once the market opens.

42. Arden Key, EDGE, Jacksonville Jaguars
An enigmatic figure dating back to his days at LSU, Key has displayed flashes in five NFL seasons. Back in 2021 as a part-time player for the San Francisco 49ers, he registered a career-high 17 quarterback hits and 6.5 sacks. This past season saw Key put up 15 QB hits and 4.5 sacks. Still only 26, he’ll be viewed by teams as a pass-rush specialist once NFL free agency opens.
43. David Montgomery, running back, Chicago Bears
This former Iowa State star has opened his career by putting up four consecutive seasons with over 1,000 total yards. Montgomery has also put up 30 touchdowns during this span and is a capable receiver. At issue here is an average of 3.9 yards per rush throughout his career. Likely the odd-man out in Chicago due to the emergence of Khalil Herbert, Montgomery should find a solid secondary market.
44. Marcus Davenport, EDGE, New Orleans Saints
Probably the biggest bust of the Mickey Loomis era in New Orleans, the Saints gave up a whole lot to trade up for Davenport in the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s responded by recording a mere 21.5 sacks in 63 career games. Last season saw Davenport tally one-half sack. Even then, some team will have interest in the 26-year-old talent. Perhaps a change of scenery will do him well as we saw with Haason Reddick in Philadelphia a season ago.
45. Jawaan Taylor, offensive tackle, Jacksonville Jaguars
Talent has never been an issue for Taylor dating back to his days with Florida. The issue has been consistency. Now 25 years old, he seems to have answered them. It could not have come at a better time with NFL free agency here. Last season saw Taylor start all 17 games while giving up five sacks. That has to be a concern for teams looking to find a solid pass protector at right tackle.
46. Jamaal Williams, running back, Detroit Lions
Some might view Williams’ 2022 performance in Detroit as a fluke. After all, he put up a league-high 17 rushing touchdowns while averaging a pedestrian 4.1 yards per carry. We’re also talking about a one-dimensional back who isn’t good in the passing game. We’ll see how Williams’ market is impacted by the several top-end NFL free agents at running back this cycle.
47. Taylor Lewan, offensive tackle, Tennessee Titans
A three-time Pro Bowler earlier in his career with the Titans, it was a surprise to learn that they have opted to release him. With that said, Lewan’s injury history and salary cap hit for 2023 made this realistic. He missed 15 games to injury a season ago. Tennessee saved nearly $13 million against the cap by moving off him.
48. Isaac Seumalo, offensive tackle, Philadelphia Eagles
A third-round pick of the Eagles back in 2016, Seumalo recovered from an injury-plagued two-year run to start all 17 games this past season. He also allowed just one sack in front of Jalen Hurts and can play all five offensive line positions. That could make this veteran one of the best NFL free agents of value.
49. JuJu Smith-Schuster, wide receiver, Kansas City Chiefs
His social media antics aside, Smith-Schuster can still produce at a high level. Last season for the Super Bowl champion Chiefs, he recorded 78 receptions for 933 yards and three touchdowns while hauling in 77% of his targets from Patrick Mahomes. Still only 26 years old entering his seventh season in the NFL, Smith-Schuster will have a market among teams interested in slot guys.
50. Jadeveon Clowney, EDGE, Cleveland Browns
What an absolutely shocking fall from grace for this former No. 1 overall pick. Clowney recorded all of four quarterback hits and two sacks in 12 games a season ago. There was also reportedly a split between the 30-year-old former Pro Bowler and his organization. As of right now, Clowney is one of those NFL free agents who can expect a short-term late-summer deal with very little guaranteed.
