Philadelphia Eagles -130
Kansas City Chiefs +110

Playing an underdog: Kansas City Chiefs (+115)

Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes have led the Kansas City Chiefs to the AFC Conference Championship each of the past five seasons, and they’ve been to the Super Bowl twice, winning one.

Everyone says defense wins championships, and if that’s your belief, bet on the Eagles. Yet, others will tell you, the NFL is a quarterback-driven league, and based on Mahomes’ success, they’re not wrong. He led the highest-scoring offense in football, and the Chiefs still had the league’s 16th-ranked defense, good enough for league average.

While the Eagles are a formidable opponent, the Chiefs have more experience, both at the QB position and when it comes to coaching. We’ll continue to bet on Mahomes.

Super Bowl pick to avoid: Super Bowl favorite Philadelphia Eagles (-130)

NFL: NFC Championship-San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

From watching the Philadelphia Eagles during the regular season, there is absolutely no reason to believe they can’t win the Super Bowl. They appeared to be the best team all season long when Jalen Hurts was healthy, becoming the final undefeated squad in football and landing the top seed in the NFC. They’ve since led two convincing victories, beating their opponents by a combined 55 points.

Yet, they have to face the Kansas City Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. It’s hard to bet against a team who has already shown they can win a Super Bowl and has only spent the past two seasons learning from their failure to repeat. We’ll take the Chiefs as the more proven but not more motivated team.

The Chargers have the benefit of having one of the best young quarterbacks in football, and he’s yet to receive his second NFL contract, which means they have more cap flexibility than most teams. Yet, starting the offseason already over the cap likely means they won’t be adding talent via the free agency market as we saw a season ago.

Instead, don’t be surprised if the Chargers try to be aggressive, either trading up in the draft or even targeting a win-now piece or two with other players available on the trade block. No matter what, the Chargers already have a strong core filled with young impact players on both sides of the ball, led by Herbert, Joey Bosa, and Derwin James

Super Bowl odds – Betting on a deep sleeper: Miami Dolphins (+4000)

NFL: Green Bay Packers at Miami Dolphins
Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Early on, the Miami Dolphins appeared to be one of the best teams in the NFL, getting out to an 8-3 record while averaging a robust 25.6 points per game. But perpetual concussion issues for Tua Tagovailoa derailed Miami’s season in coach Mike McDaniel’s first year at the helm.

As long as Tagovailoa returns to his Pro Bowl self in 2023, we like this team to bounce back strongly. We’re not saying the Miami Dolphins are our 2024 Super Bowl pick, but when glancing at the teams facing the longest odds, we like where they sit.
