The Stanley Cup missed its mark as it was shipped to its temporary home after being won on Sunday.

The hockey championship trophy found itself temporarily in the hands of the wrong family after the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in a series of six games. It is a tradition in the NHL for the players of the winning team to spend one day each with the trophy. Unfortunately, there was a slight shipping error, sending the trophy to the wrong address.

Dmitri Rudenko and his husband Kit Karbler were greeted at their Denver home with a surprise delivery in their driveway on Monday.

“The person opens the trunk, and I saw the case, and I recognized it, because I watched the final [Stanley Cup] games,” Rudenko told 9News. “Jokingly said, ‘Is that the Stanley Cup?’ And he says, ‘Yes!'”

The delivery drivers told the couple they were delivering the cup to Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog. The hockey captain lives in the same neighborhood as Rudenko and Karbler, leading to the mix-up. “They’re only one digit off,” Karbler said. “Because of that one digit, it was fortuitous for us!”

The couple had a chance to spend a few minutes with the trophy, and Karbler picked it up. “They were gentlemen, completely. They were eager to share the experience of the Cup,” Karbler said. “I had no idea that I would find it so fascinating, myself.”

While the couple could not take a selfie with the statue, they snapped a picture of the trophy to confirm its delivery before it was taken to the correct address. “It made our day,” Karbler said, “and it’s something that we’ll be able to talk about and laugh about for a long time.”
